Clay Animation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTFI7_tAgm4
I liked this clip because it showed the actual character being made at first but then it also shows it being brought to life. Since it is supposed to be a children's tv show, an episode is shown with even more characters and props and how it is filmed and how each shot is taken. I would like to do something like this but it would make too much time and theres too much that needs to be precise especially if im working by mysel

http://vimeo.com/channels/cutouts
Music wasn’t very good. Boring.

http://vimeo.com/21156169
This one is my favourite out of all the ones I’ve seen today. It is a clay animation. At the start, it is obvious that camera is in a cardboard box which is a house. The window shows moving branches as it is windy so, they would’ve had to cut out a part of the cardboard box, and make what looks like a tree out of sticks and move it around per photo. I liked how they showed close-ups of the door opening and the sound effects were good too. The movements weren’t entirely smooth but i still found it effective this way. I also liked how when the man sat in front of the open window, the sound effects made it sound like it was windy and therefore his jumper was moving as the wind came.

http://webneel.com/video/collage-cut-out-animation
i thought this animation was annoying and irrelevant.

http://webneel.com/video/polly-very-serious-search
this animation was different to other animations I’ve seen today. there is a narrator telling a story while the characters are moving. I think they used photoshop and drawing to complete this animation.

http://webneel.com/video/paper-cut-out-animation
i also find this animation interesting. It would have taken a lot of time to make as there were a lot of things that had to be moved at once in different frames. Istop Motion could be used to make something similar to this.

http://vimeo.com/6059825
This animation was also interesting. I think that they filmed some of it in real life (where the humans where shown) and the rest was drawing and photoshop.
As i was in the Philippines for the last few weeks of Term 2, i only got to show Mr. Andrews my story outline in this lesson. He thought that the story is commonly done and to be honest i thought it was too. So, i started brainstorming for the next few lessons and watched a few more animations. The ones that caught my eyes the most were the iPhone animations. Mr Andrews said that it needed to have a problem, and that problem needed to be solved. I then made another story outline according to what he said for an iPhone animation concept.

-Unlocks Phone
- puts a song on
- checks to see if there's any homework in notes. Zoom up on upper part of phone (time) its 9PM on a school night.
-Go on the Facebook app and type in something about how he has homework due and needs help
- Few friends comment, one suggests to download an app called iHomework.
- Downloads screenshot of questions onto the app and within only 5 minutes all the questions are solved.

That lesson, i also thought of what softwares i could use. I could've photoshopped all the apps or hand drew everything and cut out the actual screen part of the phone and just draw a few other home screens and slide that piece of paper on top of whichever home screen i need for the shot
In today’s lesson, i started thinking of ideas for my animation.

I wanted to make a music video animation using photoshop and Istop motion.

I recently heard a song through one of my friends and got inspired by it. The song is All I want by Kodaline so i decided to plan my animation according to it.

 The story outline was:

Girl goes missing, the police suspect that shes been abducted
Story of what actually happens to the girl with dramatic music. (she leaves to go to work and says bye to her husband. on her way back into her car a man takes her and drags her to his car)
Song starts playing
Guy opens door because someone rings the doorbell. He looks happy because he thinks its her
-Next frame is at night before he goes to sleep. He turns around and sees that she isn’t there and remembers shes gone all over again and starts crying
Song stops. The police find her body in a lake and dramatic music comes back on again.

In todays lesson, i watched a few youtube animations to get an idea of what type of animation i want to film.

This is probably my favourite short animation that i’ve seen. In just less than 3 minutes a lifetime of a story was told. Stories like this are very common but I loved the way the person who made this added in voiceovers of a poem. The 2 different people talking (mum and daughter) added a nice touch to the whole animation and definitely helped with telling the story and making the story more appealing and enjoyable to watch.  I feel like for my animation I want to do something similar to this and I should maybe look for a few short poems to inspire me with a good idea. The way the animation was made is also something I would like to do. The paper cut-outs seem like they wouldn’t be too time consuming to do and I don’t have much time left to complete this task.

This video wasn’t as effective as the ‘’see you again’’ animation. The story was still alright but I felt like the voiceovers gave a better effect than just the slides with writing. But, this style can be used if you have no one to do the voiceovers or as a last minute thing rather than actually putting in effort to put the voiceovers together. The sound effects were one of the most effective things in this animation and I loved how everything moved smoothly.

This is a video I found about how to make a picture stop motion animation. I felt like it would help a lot because I want to do something similar to the ‘’see you again’’ clip and I was confused on how to do it at first but this is a much faster way of doing it rather than making 50 different cutouts of the same character but with different emotions.

I think that this animation looks cool but it didn’t appeal to me as much as other animations did because I personally like animations with a story behind them. I liked how the guy who made the stop motion put himself in it at one point.

Although this one didn’t really have an interesting story, I still enjoyed watching it and I thought it was interesting how she made it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=HsJEGO5JgbM it was very helpful how she made a behind the scenes video.

Avatar Evaluation

  Describe any problems or difficulties you encountered during the creation and editing of your avatar. (These may include; technical difficulties, corrupt or missing files, difficulty with Photoshop tools etc;
During the creation of my avatar, I had difficulty with the quick selection tool as whenever I got to a certain point in selecting myself out of the green screen, it would select the whole picture. So, I stopped as far as I could possibly go and used the Lasso tool to carefully go around the outline of my hair. In some ways this was easier to use than the quick selection tool as I could leave parts of my hair out. Although, it is obvious that I’ve manually selected the areas around my hair but this wasn’t too noticeable once I moved it to my background. At first, I had trouble with some of the basic things such as taking out parts of photos which I later found was because I didn’t create a mask on the layer.
Did you undertake any additional Photoshop tutorials to help with your project? If so what new skills/techniques did you learn;
Yes, I did watch plenty of additional photoshop tutorials especially out of school so I wouldn’t have to keep asking Mr. Andrews for help as a lot of people were in need of assistance. I learnt how to use the burn tool to darken any blood marks/stains, I learnt how to create the effect of black eyes by using the pen tool to carefully select the outline of my eyeball; the area I wanted to be black. I learnt shortcuts of tools that I didn’t already know before or even just remembered what they were as I was using them so much. An example of this is the free transform tool (command + T). I learnt the shortcut to this during class but remembered while watching the tutorials as I would always need to use the tool. I learnt how to use the Transform tool on the top right to distort the dripping blood in the way I wanted it to be and also to make it look more realistic. I also learnt that clicking on multiply would get rid of the white background in the blood splatters or marks instead of having to create a new mask and manually delete the white background using black. It was a faster and more efficient way and saved me at least half an hour of time. I also learnt how to use the refine edge tool from watching tutorials on youtube.
  Explain how your planning (personality profile, ideas and reflections) helped to create the avatar in Photoshop;
I believe that my planning helped me a lot to create my avatar in photoshop. After completing the avatar, I now understand that it is very important to plan before you do anything. Without the personality profile, I wouldn’t have had something to refer to just in case I forgot what I had in mind for the avatar. Also, looking for images on the internet from shows or movies that relate to zombies helped me get a clear idea of what a zombie should look like which I took into consideration while completing the personality profile and creating the avatar itself.

  Clarify any time-management issues you encountered during the process and describe the steps you implemented to improve in this area (Did you have your images ready before class? Did you have your USB each lesson? Did you work on the avatar outside of class time?);
As I was looking through all of my layers in the folders I had created, I found that I named some of the layers wrong as I was rushing myself because I thought I would run out of time. I didn’t bring my USB in one lesson from what I can remember. So, in that lesson I continued looking for images to use on the internet and Flickr so I wouldn’t have to do too much at home. I worked on the avatar outside of class time more than I did during class and I spent a lot of time looking for appropriate tutorials I could refer to on YouTube out of school so I would have time in class to use the things I learnt on creating my avatar. In relation to blog posts, I didn’t save some of the work I did in class properly so they didn’t get put up on my blog.
 Discuss whether you undertook sufficient reflection to throughout your project. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Look at your blog. Does it reflect a term of work);
I think that my blog shows sufficient reflection throughout the avatar creating process, I had a total of six lessons worth of blog posts relating to the avatar project. But, I did not complete all the other task exercises on the checklist mostly because I was away for some lessons and I require help in order to do things properly so I couldn’t just follow along with the tutorials on blackboard.
List any skills, techniques or tricks you have discovered during the project.
Naming layers and creating folders/groups was one of the major things I discovered was helpful during the project. There were so many things in my avatar that without the groups I created and naming the layers, would’ve looked way too overwhelming and I probably would have gotten very annoyed if I hadn’t made groups and layer names.

Discuss your feelings about the Avatar task:
Are you satisfied with the final result?
Yes, it turned out to be exactly what I wanted it to look like.
Does the completed Avatar look like you imagined?
Yes, I envisioned the avatar to look exactly like what it looked like when I finished. Without the personality profile, I don’t think that the avatar wouldn’t have turned out half as good as it did.
Would like to change any aspects of your avatar
I could’ve added more blood splatters, drips and etc to make it look even scarier and also adding dark under eye circles and maybe even a vein popping out on my cheek and down my neck would’ve made it look even scarier.
If you could start the project again what would you do differently?
I would use a different way of taking out the green screen. The way that Mr. Andrews showed us during class would’ve been more helpful but I wanted to learn something new and try out something different. I would also have softened the edges in the character and spent more time softening the edges of the blood splatters and the dead person in the background to make it look even more realistic.
Are you pleased with the progress you have made in using Photoshop?
I am really pleased with everything I’ve learnt in photoshop during this term. I experimented with a lot of tools and learnt how to use tools to the best of my current ability. At first, photoshop confused me as there were so many tools to choose from but as the term progressed, i learnt where everything was and if I ever had any trouble with the tools or didn’t know where anything was, there were always tutorials to watch or Mr Andrews was there if I needed any help. I feel like I will be using photoshop out of school and assignments as I would like to further improve my abilities and get better at it.

character profile

sixth

In today’s lesson, i did some last minute touch ups to my avatar. I ensured there was a shadow to the dead person by double clicking the layer and editing the drop shadow. I then softened the edges as it looked to harsh. To do this, i used a soft brush just to go around the outer parts of the dead person. Then i used the bevel and emboss tool to darken any blood splatters or wounds by double clicking the layer and changing the settings on the bevel and emboss. I also put more blood on my upper lip as Mr Andrews said that it would look better so, i selected different shades of red and painted over my lips some fake blood.

fifth

In today’s lesson, i moved the avatar into the background. First, i zoomed in on the avatar and clicked on the quick selection tool. I made sure the brush was a hard brush. i clicked and dragged the tool around the outline of my body. This did take a while to do and i found that it would  select areas i didn’t want to be selected. to get rid of this, i held down the alt key and dragged in the areas i didn’t want to be selected. I also used the  Lasso tool on the upper part of my face and around my hair as the quick selection tool wasn’t detecting that area properly. Then i clicked on the refine edge button. I smoothed out the ragged edges by adjusting the smooth to around 20-30. I turned on smart radius and changed it to 1 pixel. I also set the feather to 1 pixel. I made sure to output that image as a new layer with layer mask. Then i used the move tool to drag the image of myself and dragged it to the background that i previously made. I resized and moved the image using the free transform tool. I decided to bring the avatar character closer to the screen a) to cut out the st. hildas logo and b) to make it look as if its from a scene in a horror movie when the zombie pops out at you. I made sure a bit of the middle window was still on show as i didn’t want the avatar to fully cover it.

fourth

In today’s lesson, i worked on making the background for my avatar and putting the avatar into the background. The main background i decided to use was an abandoned mental hospital room with a bed and three windows. The overall image was already black and white so i didn’t have to fiddle too much with the settings and make it look similar to my own image. I adjusted the brightness. I took 2 images to use in the windows as the windows in the original image weren’t what i wanted. One of them was a park and the other was a canal and trees. I used the free transform tool to resize and move the images to fit on top of the original windows. The two images worked together well and it looks like its from the same place. Then, i looked for a broken window on google as i couldn’t find any that i wanted to work with on flickr. Once i found what i wanted to use, i opened it on photoshop. to make the windows look as if they are each broken in different areas, i used the free transform tool to flip the window or rotate it. Doing this makes it look like i took three different images for the window when really, i only used 1. To finish off the image, i took an image of a dead man off google and put it near the window to make it look as if Erica had just finished her meal.

third

To darken up any wounds and make the blood drips look more realistic, i used the colour picker tool to select colours and darken up the blood splatters. I also changed the colour to royal reds and other shades of red to make the blood look more realistic. I had to make sure to create a new mask on whichever layer i was working on to be able to do this. I then created a new layer and started doing the eyes. I used the pen tool to select the parts of my eyes that i wanted to be black. Then i right clicked the selected area, make selection and left it on the default settings and hit okay. then i clicked select > refine edge to make sure the eye didn’t have jagged edges. I brought up the feathering a little bit to soften the edges and also brought up the contrast. I pressed shift + delete to bring up the fill tool and selected black and hit okay. to deselect i clicked command + D.

second

In today’s lesson, i started working on the blood marks that i would use in my avatar. I took a dripping blood effect off of google since i couldn’t find any ones that suited what i wanted to use on flickr or any other creative commons websites and made a new layer. Then i used the free transform tool to resize the image and place it around the area i wanted it to be. I set this on multiply  I clicked the transform button on the top right hand corner of the page on photoshop to distort the blood to a way where it would look as if the blood was dripping out of my mouth. I added a few other blood splatters around the avatar’s face and on the avatar’s shirt. I set all of these blood marks on multiply so it would get rid of the white background and also to make the blood look more realistic. I changed the opacity in some of the blood splatters.

first lesson making avatar

First off, i opened my image that Mr Andrews took of me on photo shop. It came up with the camera raw automatically and i adjusted my skin tone and overall skin colour on that. Since i was looking for more of a zombie look, i looked at images from the walking dead and grave encounters to see the basic skin colour of a zombie. I edited out any of my imperfections and blemishes using the Healing Brush tool. Since i had dark under eyes in the image, i left it alone as i was looking for the zombie effect and zombie’s usually have darker under eye areas. I then went on to make a new adjustment layer to darken the image even more. to do this, i clicked on Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Black and White. For the reds, i set it to around -140 and the
yellows to around 100. I left all the other settings at default. I decreased the opacity to around 80% on this layer so it wasn’t too harsh. Then, i took an image from the internet of a wood texture and copied and pasted it onto the image. I used the free transform tool (Command T) to resize the image of the texture and move it around to where i wanted it to go. then, i turned down the opacity. Then i created a new mask on that layer and erased the parts of the texture image that i didn’t want (using a hard brush and the colour black to remove) and left myself with a wound on the top right corner of my forehead. I had two wood textures to choose from and i ended up choosing the second one.

First lesson working on avatar

In todays lesson, i started editing my image on photoshop for the assignment. I did basic things for this lesson such as removing blemishes using the Healing brush tool that i've used a number of times throughout this term. Before doing any of this, I used camera raw to edit the image's colour according to what i wanted the overall colour of the image to be. On my character profile, i have stated that my character has grey, pale skin. To do this, i adjusted the temperature, exposure, shadows, whites, blacks and etc. i pretty much played with all the settings.

What is an avatar?

Computing: An avatar is a graphic representation of a person in cyberspace.
Hinduism: an avatar is a deliberate descent of a deity to Earth, or a descent of a supreme being and is mostly translated in to english as incarnation, but more accurately as appearance or manifestation. The term VATAR means one who was descended - descended from Godliness to human form. Avatar means those who descended to Earth from the Spiritual world.

Emotions Exercise - Anxiety

The similarities in these three images are that all three women have both of their hands around the forehead area. They are looking both stressed and angry. They also look as if they are at unease & worry.

Emotions Exercise - excited

In these 3 image examples of the emotion ‘excited’, the children have their mouth open in an circle-ish shape. Their eyes are often slanted or half closed. Hands are used in some way in these three photos - whether it’d be on their face or out in the air. They are looking very enthusiastic and eager.

Emotions Exercise - Sadness

What is evident in these 3 images is that the people that show sadness have their heads down or are looking down at the floor. They may have tears forming in their eyes or their hand on their head. In the third photo, the woman is already crying. this is evident because her nose is flared and there is a tear rolling down her cheek. Her eyes are also closed. In the first and second photo, the 2 people are looking down at the floor.

Hermione Granger Photoshop

In this lesson, i got introduced to Photoshopping celebrities/people to fix imperfections. Since we were just starting with fixing imperfections, the whole class used the same image of Hermione Granger which was available on BlackBoard. I learnt that it is important to always use high resolution photos on photoshop so i am able to see the photos clearly even when the image is zoomed in. We were taught to use the spot healing tool to fix any small blemishes. But, there was a better tool that Mr Andrews showed us that was much more helpful and effective when it comes to editing images to fix blemishes. This was the Healing Brush Tool. All you had to do was select a clear spot in the face with a similar color (by holding onto the alt key). She had a few blemishes and a darker under eye area which i fixed by using the healing brush tool.

In today’s Media Arts lesson,
Mr Powell was our substitute teacher, for the first 3/4 of the lesson, he showed us images to inspire us for our upcoming assignment. Afterwards, i kept doing my image of harry styles. I retouched more of his smaller imperfections using the healing brush tool. Over the night, i watched videos on youtube of how to whiten teeth on photoshop. I made a new layer for his teeth and with the skills i learnt, i whitened harry styles teeth using the Lasso Tool. with this tool, i made a rough outline of his teeth, i tried getting as close as i could to the teeth. Then i clicked on brightness and contrast on the right hand side of the page. i decreased the level of contrast and increased the level of brightness to create the illusion of whiter teeth.  At first, i didn’t create a new layer before whitening his teeth therefore it made it had for me to see the difference in the colour of his teeth before and after so i had to start again. In the next lesson i would like to change the colour of his eyes. I also changed the brightness of the image making his skin lighter and closer to what it really looks like in real life.

Today's Lesson

Last weeks lesson

Celebrity touching up - Harry Styles with slight changes using liquify tool - 25/02/14

To start off with, i used the healing brush tool to remove any imperfections. Then, i liquified the image (subtly filter > Liquify… / ^command x) with the liquifying tool, i fixed up the outer parts of his face making some parts extend and decreasing some parts in size. I also had to make sure i made a new layer and mask for liquifying his face so i could see the difference in what i was doing.
I didn't have any trouble in today's lesson since i did basic things in photoshop that I've already done before.
Things i could improve on - if i were to do this image again, i would take care with liquifying his face and making it not look too visible because the longer i look at the image, the more i can tell that his face has been liquified. Especially on the far right side of his face.

In today's media arts class:
- i selected the parts of kim kardashians face using the quick selection tool.
- added a new layer with a mask of the parts that i selected

- changed the brush to a soft brush
- (in black colour i softened the edges)
- image > adjustments > brightness/contrast & colour balance.
- on color balance i set the mode of tone balance to mid tones and then selected preserve luminosity.
the colour levels ended up being +9 +2 -28
The point of editing this image and what i was trying to achieve was to change her skin colour to match what the rest of her body colour is because it is usually a lot darker than what is shown in the original photo.
I could improve this image by taking more time on making sure the edges were properly softened.

Lesson 1 & 2 - Creating the Emu and Frog picture

lesson 1/2
Today in media arts, I continued working on my emu and tree frog image. The goal of this task was to combine both animals together to create one unusual animal. On the first lesson, I cropped the emu’s head and copied and pasted it onto the frog image which was the base. I then made sure that the nose, eyes and mouth were all aligned. To do this, i clicked free transform and made the image align (by flipping the image, tilting the image, etc.) to those 3 facial features as best i could. Turning the opacity from 100% to 55-65% was a crucial step. In order to get rid of the parts of the emu image i didn’t want, i had to select the brush tool while making sure the brush would paint out in the colour black. Switching between the different brush types (hard and soft) was very important in creating the image.

Problems i encountered -
I got confused a few times with making sure that the correct layer and colour was selected. Also, i had to keep re-doing the image because i took out too much of the emu.
